Kentuckys Unique Fall Festival
By: Gail Leino

Few states in the union have as many trees or as much fall splendor as Kentucky. Blue Heron State Park in the Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area is the newest and most unusual. Late

September offerings by the park include a Storyteller's Festival.

The scary stories told by national performers are aimed at school children and are presented in conjunction with activities of interest to families. These include dulcimer workshops and concerts as well as an old time toys display.

Blue Heron has a restored coal mining town with several buildings on a self-guided tour. The park has 150 plus miles of hiking trails. The National River and Recreation Area has 180 miles of marked horse trails. Kentucky makes a wonderful place to tour on horseback for foliage lover's.

The park service operates two equestrian campgrounds with modern facilities including hot showers, electric hookups and dump stations. These are Station Camp Horse Camp off Hwy 294 west of Oneida Tennessee and Bear Creek Horse camp off Hwy 742 near Stearns, Kentucky. These have 24 and 23 sites respectively. Reservations and information can be obtained from the National Park Service Concessionaire.

Charit Creek Lodge offers a variety of rustic and remote accommodations. Horse stalls for up to 11 horses are available. Rates are reasonable. The campgrounds at Blue Heron are open through the end of October. Black bears have been reintroduced into the region with a population of about 50. Food must be safely stored.

The area also boasts a lack of light pollution which allows remarkable star gazing. There are over 1300 documented archeological sites which are an estimated 20% of the total number. There are Class III and IV white water rafting opportunities as well as mountain biking. The National Park Service offers a 2 hour train ride for $15 in the Stearns area.
